Curriculum

Whole School Curriculum Vision

At Fitzharrys School we believe that students should be given every opportunity to foster a life-long passion and deep understanding of every school subject they are taught. We feel that a broad and balanced curriculum with clear intent and precise implementation will lead to excellent outcomes for all.

At Fitzharrys we have three core values that run through all that we do and teach:

  • Aspiration
  • Opportunity
  • Integrity

Our curriculum as a whole, and within each discrete subject, aims to encapsulate and promote these core values. We have a knowledge-rich curriculum which meets the needs to all students at each age and stage of their education, supported by excellent extra-curricular and super-curricular opportunities.

Students complete a three-year Key Stage Three where they will experience a broad range of subjects from across a variety of disciplines. These will include opportunities for theory, practical and performance-based experiences. We believe that by continuing with these subjects for three years, before narrowing their subject choices for Key Stage Four, allows them to truly experience and value all subjects regardless of previous experience.

Students will make options choices for Key Stage Four in the Spring Term of Year 9, with clear information and opportunities made available for them to experience each subject and gain information through our options process.

Key Stage 3

For a more detailed overview, visit our Key Stage 3: Years 7-9 webpage.

Key Stage 4

All students will take the core subjects:

  • English Literature and Language
  • Maths
  • Science (either triple or combined)
  • Core Physical Education

Students will also continue to study PSHE.

In addition to the core subjects, students will pick up four options subjects.

We encourage Fitzharrys students to study a Modern Foreign Language and either History or Geography as two of their options subjects. By studying a language and a humanity, in addition to the core subjects of Maths, English, and Science, students will achieve their EBacc (English Baccalaureate) - an internationally-recognised qualification. The EBacc is a set of subjects at GCSE that keeps young people's options open for further study and future careers.

We support students in choosing alternative pathways where appropriate. We tailor our offer to each individual student, and we make vocational and other suitable courses available where needed.

For further information, visit our Key Stage 4: Years 10-11 webpage.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, we offer a range of subjects as part of our Sixth Form: JMF6-Abingdon provision, in collaboration with our partner school, John Mason. Our ambition is for every student to access outstanding learning opportunities, which encourage them to become academically successful, happy, confident and inquiring young people. JMF6 offers a range of around 30 subjects along with opportunities including the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and our enrichment programme.

As part of enrichment, all students have the opportunity to access:

  • Extended Project Qualification
  • Core Maths
  • Oxbridge and Russell Group Pathways
